The Story

For those unfamiliar, TOMS Shoes started in 2006 after Tom Mycoskie befriended some children while traveling in Argentina. He noticed that they had no shoes to protect their feet from cuts and injury, or the deadly diseases that can penetrate bare skin. He decided to center his company’s mission around the idea of One for One.

For each pair of TOMS Shoes purchased, one pair is given to a child in need. Within the first year, Tom was able to return to Argentina with 10,000 shoes to give away.

Why Shoes?

According to the TOMS website, the reason they chose to give shoes is because footwear is a “fundamental resource for protecting children’s health and providing them with opportunity.” In developing nations, many children have to walk several miles of unpaved, undeveloped roads to get to school, or to find food and drinkable water. These journeys can be rough on a child’s feet.

The Shoes
